NHL 2002 is a video game released by EA Sports in 2001. It is the predecessor to NHL 2003. The game's cover man is Pittsburgh Penguins superstar and owner Mario Lemieux, who had just made a comeback after being retired for three and a half years. It was the first installment of the NHL series to be released on Xbox.
Features[edit]
Bill Clement is replaced by Don Taylor for NHL 2002. Taylor's quirky and often slapstick commentary style drew mixed reception from fans of the game.

After September 11, 2001, a patch was created that changed the image shown on the loading screen before New York Rangers games. Originally, it had been the World Trade Center. It was changed to the Statue of Liberty. (New York Islanders games simply showed the arena.)[citation needed]
GBA version[edit]
NHL 2002 was the only game in the series to be released on the Game Boy Advance. This version is an updated port of NHL 96 for the SNES,[1] and contains many features from that past title.

I recently rented NHL 2002 from the local family video and I must say, for not being a big fan of sports, this game has me blown away. Excellent graphics, great sound, and an extreemly large amount of realism that's all good. It has create a player, which isn't much in variety, but works well enough to capture most personalities on the ice as well as most names will actually be spoken by the announcers. The graphics are PS2 excellence, and the presentation of the whole game rocks. Passing, shooting, Deking, and goal tendng are are all easy to execute, and the pace of the game is furious, but enjoyable. The best thing about NHL 2002 is the commentary. I played for 6 hours straight before the announcers repeated their first phrase, and after about 25 total hours of gaming, I still hear new phrases, and jokes.
This game is rated for everyone, but some of the stuff spoken in the commentary is hilarious. If anyone needs a little switch up to their gaming routine, I strongly suggest this title, or if you wanna smear some Whalers on the Ice. Either way, I have all love for EA and NHL 2002 View image: /infopop/emoticons/iconbiggrin.gifFuniest phrase so far: 'Whoa.he just droped the chalupa on Sykoya!' Ya, 'Sykora' the New Jersey Devils player View image: /infopop/emoticons/iconwink.gifThis message was edited by Androgyne on June 23, 2002 at 20:40. Ill assume you meant Sykora.
View image: /infopop/emoticons/iconwink.gifYeah, Ive always been a big fan of EAs hockey titles, but 2001 and 2002 are spectacular. Personally I still prefer 2001, mostly because the player ratings are better spread out and they dont dock defensemen any points(ie Blake being 2002s best D with an 89 rating). Also, the card system and commentary in 2002 are annoyingly 'arcade-ish', but thankfully both can be ignored/turned off. Anyway, both are great games and im eagerly anticipating 2003. Sure it's awesome but once you play it for while and play it against friends, you'll soon realize that the game has plenty of bugs. They have yet to fix the shot from the blue line. The cards system is ridiculous but I can live with it.
The problem is that NHL 2003 will have even more arcade like features. One so called amazing feature, is the fact that if you body check a lot of players during the game, they'll freeze all the players of the opposing team so you can go and try to score against the goalie.
NHL 2002 is definitely my favorite PS2 game. I'm about half way through an 82 game season with the Bruins, and loving it. I don't really care about the card system one way or the other, I'm just trying to unlock all the easter eggs and extra celebrations. I'm sure the arcade-type stuff will be optional in 2003, like that ridiculous 'paralyze the other team' mode.
That's actually an easter egg in 2002, or at least something like it.I have only two complaints: the first is that I'm playing on medium, and some of the season stats are really outta whack. For example, the top 3 penalty minute getters are Bruins, and lead the rest of the pack by 40 to 20 minutes. Also, ten of the top twelve hitters are Bruins. The second complaint is about shooting. A hard wrister from the high slot with any of my first liners is practically guaranteed to go in with auto-aiming on, but manual aim is almost impossible to use. I tried getting used to it, but it seemed like my shots rarely went where I tried to place them.Anyway, it's a ridiculously fun game, especially multiplayer. Ive had no problems in 2002 with the ridiculous blue-line wristers that were rampant in 2001.
Then again, I use only manual aim, which takes a tiny bit more finesse, but makes for a much more enjoyable gameplay experience, imo.I could play 2001 or 2002 for a hell of a long time by myself, but with friends its even more fun. Some good friends of mine actually played an entire 82 game season, plus playoffs with expansion draft teams in 2001. It took them nearly a year to finish since they only played against one-another.As for other good EA sports titles, Madden is a lot of fun, though better for multiplayer than single, imo. Also, the FIFA titles are really good. Ive spent countless hours playing FIFA World Cup 2002 with my friends(thought that game only makes playable qualifying national teams), and FIFA 2002 is a great single player game, with hundreds of european club teams as well as MLS and national teams.

I and my friends played a few seasons against each other. We're only three, so the seasons went by pretty quickly.
Or let's just say that we played something like 5-8 games a day View image: /infopop/emoticons/iconsmile.gif. Quote:Still, my favourite is '94Bah! '97 on the Genesis was the pinnacle of the series. One of my friends and I played like 2 entire 82 game series in that game, with the full 20 minute periods. In fact, when my roommate bought a Genesis for like $10 at a thrift store, the first thing I did was go out and buy NHL '97. I was about to buy a Genesis again so I could play this game over the summer, but my aunt just found my old Genesis complete with my original '97 cart which will hopefully still have all my old players and stats on it.
